Hoyee Adeetin Tourist Center

From the onset, community participation and support were essential in the planning and design of this cultural interpretive site.   Together with the Grand Canyon Trust, a community process was put in place that was respectful of Navajo culture and tradition.   Over the course of two years, we worked intimately with community members in designing and planning an interpretive site that was fundamentally based in the research, understanding and respect of Navajo tradition and culture.

The design of this Navajo Tourist destination looked to go beyond designing a place with a “Navajo Feel” but rather integrate aspects of local tradition and culture within the design and planning process itself. Navajo concepts of place and landscape were explored, while traditional design and patterning were also used in setting up the design framework for the site.

Ultimately, the Hoyéé Adéétin Tourist Destination is envisioned as dynamic, active place where community members and visitors alike will come to create deeper connections with the local culture and landscape.
